Wow, I miss you!  Thanks for all your work yesterday.  If you open the comments box on yesterday’s post you can see the books your classmates are reading.  There are some great recommendations there!

If you go on your classmates’ blogs you can read about a lot of different things.  Edward has written about dinosaurs, Sponge Bob and more.  He asks for your opinion, so make sure to read and comment.  Piper created a fun description of recess. Landon, Sophie and May chose different prompts about winter.  Brady wrote about his dog’s escape, a robot and summer. Vera’s written about her leprechaun trap.  Please leave comments and get a little conversation going sort of like we might do during writing share.

Here are some things to do in Our Day, March 19

Start off your learning day by completing your weather graph, noting the temperature on the section of the graph you color in and the type of cloud you see.  Use the symbols on the cloud finder.  We usually do that between 8:30 and 9:00.

Reading – Find a nice quiet place to read and enjoy at least 30 minutes with a great book.  When you finish reading for the day – leave a comment below telling the title of the book you read and prediction you have (unless you’re at the end of the book) for how the main character is going to change by the end of the book.  If you’re not sure how to do that, write about a favorite part.

Here’s an example of what I mean for making a prediction.  I read Ember’s End by S.D.Smith.  Picket starts out as a fierce warrior who will do whatever it takes to defend Natalia and save Princess Emma.  He takes incredible risks in battle.  I think at the end of the book, he will live quietly away from lots of action because he is thinking of how sad the battles are making him in this part of the book.

Here’s an example of what I mean for sharing a favorite part.  I read Dreams by Ezra Jack Keats.  My favorite part was discovering that a little paper mouse can make big difference to a pet cat who is being chased by a dog in the middle of the night.  You’ll be surprised too.

Writing – Choose your topic from the prompts below and write for at least 10 minutes without stopping.  Write with as many of the elaboration strategies as you can.  Use details like when, where, how and why, add descriptive adjectives, use dialogue, make sure there is action and add in some inner thought.  Don’t forget capitals and punctuation.   These poems are from Hand Spring by Douglas Florian.  Hopefully they will get you in a spring-like frame of mind. • Make your own list of things you love about spring – the pros.  Make a second list of the things you hate about spring – the cons.
• Write about what you think is the best game to play outside in spring, what it is, why do you feel it is the best.
• My favorite place to goin springtime is…
• What if the weather was like spring all year long?
• Something fun to do on April Fools’ Day is…
• Describe something you experience in spring with each your five senses.
• Or any other topic you’d like to write about today.
• You can do your writing in the journal we sent home or you can write is as a blog post.  If you do that, we can all read it – it will be a little like writing share.

Take a movement, game or music break.  Maybe you’d have fun with  Go Noodle Video like Peanut Butter In a Cup or The Water Cycle Song. Click on the links to find them.

Science – After watching the Mystery Science video yesterday, I think our climate is like Doug’s in Ohio. Today you’ll do the activity and make a Climate Decoder.   Click on the blue link to start the activity.  It has lots of steps.  Do it at a time when you can have help – you really will need a partner to check your work. (I’m regretting that I didn’t send home extra maps and temperature guides.)  Watch the first part of the video before you get your papers and colored pencils.  Take it slow so you end up with a climate map of the world.  It is really cool!  We’ll be using it when we make our weather forecasts that connect with your global geography project.  Put it in a safe place.

Take a walk, make some cookies, or slime or a picture.  Mrs. Nardone has created this Art website.  She’s got some fun ideas and she’s hoping to collect some pictures of the art you create in a gallery. Check it out.

Math – Choose another one of the worksheets sent home yesterday to use as a math warm up.  Here are today’s problems.  See if there are two that feel like just right challenges.   Remember, if you can solve the problem in just a minute or two, it’s too easy.  If you don’t know how to begin it’s too hard.

Van had 3,500 Legos altogether in a bin.

 He used 154 red bricks, 437 white bricks and 94 blue bricks to make a spaceship.

How many Lego bricks did Van use altogether to build his spaceship?

How many Legos did he have left in the bin?

Landin collected stones at the beach.  She was using them to build a fort.

She found 332 white stones, 164 brown stones and 116 speckled stones.

How many stones did Landin find altogether at the beach?

The next day she collected half as many stones as she had started with.  That was enough to finish the fort.

How many stones did Landin collect the second day to finish her fort?

How many stones were in the fort altogether?

Anna organized her craft supplies.

She sorted and counted 10,327 beads, 12,682 stickers and 4,857 feathers.

How many supplies did Anna organize altogether?

She used 20,897 of those supplies to decorate gifts she was making for her family.  How much did she have left?

Justin has 21,347 crayons.  Max has 16,108 crayons.

How many more crayons does Justin have than Max has?

Elena has 2,134 more crayons than Max has.

When Justin, Max and Elena put their crayons altogether, how many crayons will that be?

Sophie baked 124 muffins.

Katherine baked 12 times as many.  How many muffins did Katherine bake?

Sophie baked some blueberry muffins and some apple muffins. 

If 96 of the muffins were blueberry, how many of them were apple?

Piper had 12,080 Legos.  She lost 3,127 of them.  How many Legos did Piper have then?

Piper worked with Holden to build a village out of her Legos.  They used 3,762 in the castle. 

How many Legos did Piper have left at the end of the project?

You can do the math work in the journal that was sent home, or in whatever way is easiest for you. You can leave your math work in a comment, take a picture of  your math work and post it, or save it for when we are able to be together again.

Social Studies  –  At the end of the day, I hope you’ll have some time to work on your Country Inquiry.  Please stay true to the note-taking skills we’ve been learning and don’t copy – always use your own words.  You can find your assignment and notes in the blue folder so you are sure of what parts need to be worked on.  Whatever pages you had given me are in your folders.
