It’s Wednesday – here are some math problems to solve

numbersThere are three books in the Smell Like… series by Suzanne Selfors.  Smells Like Dog has 384 pages.  Smells Like Treasure has 432 pages.  Smells Like Pirates has 384 pages.  I’m on page 212 in the third book.  How many pages have I read altogether so far?  How many pages do I still have left to read?

(I have to tell you, I can’t wait to find out what happens to Homer, Dog, Hercules, Lorelei and Madame.  It’s funny and exciting.)

There are eleven books in the Magic Bone series.  Five of the books have 108 pages.  Six of the books had 123 pages.  When you have finished reading the entire series, how many pages will you have read?

Write your own math problem about your summer reading (or anything you can think of) and leave it in a comment for the rest of us to solve.

Happy matching!

It’s Monday – here are some books to enjoy

book 1book 2book 3It’s Monday. What are you reading? I just finished The Truth According to Us by Annie Barrows. I’m reading a book about teaching called Learning Targets and I’m finishing up the Smells Like… series by Suzanne Selfors. This is a trilogy I wrote about at the beginning of the summer here. The more I read, the more convinced I am that this is a great set of books for some many of you. It’s suspenseful and funny, fast moving and surprising. Homer Winslow Pudding and Dog are fabulous characters.  Bumbling and smart at the same time.  Start the school year with them. You’ll be glad you did!

The Honest TruthA couple of weeks ago I got a message from Oliver saying that he and his brother were reading The Honest Truth by Dan Gemeinhart as part of a library book group. He said he thought I would like it. It’s on the Great Stone Face list too so I decided to give it a try.  I’m glad I did. It is a perfect book to read with a group. There are so many things to wonder and think about. If your family is interested in a book that will inspire conversations about choices, living, dying, and what is important, this would be a great book to read together.

first 4 Magic BoneAlexis shared the Magic Bone series with me. I’ve yet to read the first one to learn how the “bone” is unearthed, but in the last couple weeks I have really enjoyed several of Sparky’s adventures with his magic bone. He’s gone to Maui, Rome, Switzerland and seven other places so far. What dog lover (Can’t you see why Alexis recommended them!) wouldn’t enjoy seeing the world from a dog’s point of view, learning how dogs might view people, or having the thrill of traveling to different places with a “magic bone.” Sparky gets into some funny and scary situations, but his love for Josh and his appreciation for home always seem to pull him through in the nick of time.

Puppy Pirates 1Puppy Pirates 2Continuing on with the dog theme, Erin Soderberg’s first two Puppy Pirates books have been published. We learned about those when we explored her website during our Quirky celebration. The series begins with Wally, a golden retriever pup, who is looking for a place to belong and call home. He decides to give pirating a try and stows away aboard Red Beard’s ship, The Salty Bone. While in hiding he discovers Henry, another stowaway – different because he is a boy and together they become a team. If they can prove their worth, they can stay. If not, it’s the plank for them both. In Stowaway readers meet all the Puppy Pirates and learn their different personalities. In X Marks the Spot readers get a sense of how these adventures will unfold as the series is written. Catnapped is announced as the third in the series. I think you’ll have fun enjoying the crew of The Salty Bone. Which pup is your favorite – mine might be Old Salt.

It’s Wednesday – here are some problems to solve

numbersYikes!  Sorry about Friday and Monday – family fun sort of got in the way.  I have been reading (I’ll put some recommendations on our sidebar bookshelf)  and canoeing. (Did you know you can get pretty close to a heron if you’re quiet? Cool!)  I hope your summer is great.  Enjoy!

There are seven perches on my birdfeeder. A purple finch sits on each perch. Each bird eats four seeds a minute. How many seeds will the finches in altogether in five minutes?

There were three pairs of cardinals nesting around our yard. Each pair laid four eggs. The babies are fledged and have left the nest. How many cardinals (parents and fledglings together) are in our yard?

A chickadee is 5 1/2 inches long. A turkey vulture is 26 inches long. About how many chickadees would you need to put in a line to equal the length of two turkey vultures? (The answer won’t be exact.)

It’s Wednesday – here are some math problems to solve

numbersLaird got out his Legos.  His bin held 2.500 bricks.  He built a house and a car out of them.  He used 752 for the house and 216 for the car.  How many Lego bricks were still left in the Lego bin?

Nick started reading The Hobbit.  He was on page 86.  The book has 372 pages altogether.  How many more pages does he have to read before he is done?

Stella went to tennis camp.  In Monday they used 8 cans of balls.  On Tuesday they used 6 cans of balls.  On Wednesday they used 5 cans of balls.  On Thursday they they used 7 cans of balls.   Each can had 4 balls in it.  How many balls did they use during the 4-day camp?

It’s Monday – here are some books you might enjoy reading

Quinny and HopperI think I have found the first read aloud for 3E, Quinny and Hopper.  It’s about a girl, Quinny, who moves from New York City to the country in the summer between second and third grade.  Everything is different and Quinny isn’t sure she likes that at all.  From her upstairs window she notice a boy who looks to be about her age in the yard next door.  Maybe they could be friends?  Maybe this won’t be the worst summer ever?  Maybe… but things don’t always go smoothly; especially when you add two younger sisters for Quinny, two older (twins) brothers for Hopper, a grouchy neighbor with an opinionated niece, Victoria and an attack chicken named Freya.  I think you’ll like the characters and the action.  Leave a comment to let me know what you think.

Danger in Ancient RomeThe second Ranger in Time is out.  It’s called Danger in Ancient Rome.  This time Ranger gets called back to the world of the Colosseum.  He is there to help two boys who have been placed into servitude in gladiator training.  Marcus serves the master of the barracks and training grounds and Quintus must fight as a gladiator to earn his freedom, along with the right to return to his brother.  I am glad I didn’t live back then.  It seems like hard life and a very brutal time.  The research information shared at the end is enlightening.  It gives you a window into how authors research in order to write.  Where would you go to learn information for a story?

Hot Diggity DogsHot Diggity Dogs is the third in the Ready, Set, Dogs series by Stephanie Calmenson and Joanna Cole.  This time there are lost dogs to find, yummy hotdogs to try and a summer festival, Bark in the Park, to enjoy.  This is the perfect fun read for dog lovers!  Alexis, would want a necklace so you could play with Ethan?  Ginger I can imagine you doing the dance with “Fang” and “Spot.”  Can’t you?

What books have you found to enjoy?  Leave a comment to let us know what you’re reading.

PS The sixth IQ – Alcatraz is a unexpected and great ending to the series.  There were hints all along – but there were surprises all the way through.

PPS – If you’re looking for different suggestions, the books on the sidebar are all worth reading too!  Enjoy.

It’s Friday – are you trying something new?

goldfinchThis summer I thought I’d try to write, read a book, and draw a little picture everyday.  I love art, but I don’t feel super confident about what I can do.  I take a long time to sketch because I try to make it perfect; except there is no such thing… so all I really end up doing is using a lot of time.  I thought practice more.   The 3E motto: Practice Makes Progress popped into my head.  My daily drawing goals were to practice contour drawing – to speed myself up a bit – and to try to find a way to put light into my pictures to make them more 3-D.

tufted titmouse

Here’s some of the drawings I’ve done so far.  After working in a little sketch book for a while I thought of putting them in my calendar.  The first two days were fine, but the third one – the second hummingbird – made me feel like quitting.  I thought about getting a new calendar and throwing this one out.  (“Silly!  That’s what learning is – making mistakes.  My class knows that.  I should too.”) and about covering it up with white stickers.  Finally my feathers calendar artMrs. Eaves side won.  Check it out.  I didn’t want to make a unicorn-hummingbird.  But I did!   I’ll be trying again…and again…and again.

Do you have a summer goal?  Maybe you’re practicing to so you can swim out to the deep dock.  Do you have a surfing goal?  Maybe you’re trying to write poems, a story or a series even.  Are you trying something at camp?  Maybe you hope to grow vegetables to enter in a fair.  Maybe you’ll invent a new cupcake recipe.  If you’re working toward something, make a post, or leave a comment and tell us how it’s going.  Summer is a fun time to give different things a try.  Hope to hear from you!

numbersBen, Tim and Nick went camping.  They roasted marshmallows for everyone.  Each of them put two marshmallows on a stick at a time.  They roasted marshmallows like this 7 times.  How many marshmallows did they roast altogether?

They made s’mores out of the marshmallows they roasted.  They used 2 roasted marshmallows, 2 graham crackers, and 1/2 of a chocolate bar on each s’more.  They made them until their roasted marshmallows ran out.

How many graham crackers did they use altogether?

How many chocolate bars did they have before they started making the s’mores?

It’s late in the afternoon because I wanted to finish  The Windy City – IQ 5 before I wrote the post.  I wanted  to see if it was something you’d like reading.  I think it is!  IQ is a series of six books by Roland Smith.  The series is full of action, mystery and excitement.  Q (short for Quest) and Angela have recently become step-brother and sister.  Their parents are musicians   and their new songs have rocked to the top of the charts.  The band is touring the United States.  Q and Angela are traveling with them, but something is up.  A terrorist ghost cell seems to be following them wherever they go.  Philadelphia to Washington DC to Kitty Hawk and San Antonio and now Chicago.  Somehow Boone, who manages the roadies, takes care of things.  He’s not what he seems.  Is he FBI, CIA, something else?  Is he who he says he is?  He shows up in the strangest places and in the strangest way.   Can he be trusted?   It will take until the last book to know. (I’ll be starting that one tonight!)  The six books are all one story, so you do need to begin with the first and read on.  IQ is fast paced and exciting, full of espionage and gadgets. If you’re up for an action-packed challenge make sure you give IQ a try.

I  discovered a new series called, Starring Jules.  She’s in second grade and full of sass and pizzazz.  This shows at the diner when she teaches her little brother, Big Henry, how to make a “fizzy ice-cream cone” and sings a snappy jingle to encourage him along.  What’s extra-amazing about this moment is that the person sitting behind Jules in the next booth is Colby Kingston, a film agent.  She thinks Jules will be just right for a commercial.  After speaking with her parents, Colby invites Jules to an audition and one thing leads to another and another. The three books published so far in the series, Starring Jules (as herself), Starring Jules (in drama-rama) and Starring Jules (super-secret spy girl), share how Jules does at the audition and what happens next as she launches her acting career.  Along with acting, Jules is still in school.  And because of this, she has to deal with ex-friends, teasing, bossiness, jealousies and all the things that come with being part of a school, and a classroom and a family. Jules has a lot to show us about ourselves.  She is a lot of fun.  Enjoy!

Also fun are Detective Gordon – The First Case by Ulf Nilsson and The Top Secret Diary of Celie Valentine – Friendship Over by Julie Sternberg (author of Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie – with similar appeal.)

It’s Friday – have fun noticing

downy woodpecker fledglingI have loved this poem for a long time.  It inspires me to stop, look and see.  Yesterday I noticed a mama turkey with 14 chicks in a field, a mama pheasant with 6 babies crossed the road and 5 downy woodpecker fledglings feeding at our feeders.  (They’re as big as the parents but not as savvy about landing, holding on, finding the seeds.)  I’ve been looking around our yard.  Here are a few images of what I’ve noticed.  What do you see that brings you wonder?  Makes you smile?

oak gallsTo look at any thing,

If you would know that thing,

You must look at it long:

To look at this green and say,

“I have seen spring in these

Woods” will not do – you must

Be the thing you see:

You must be the dark snakes of

DSC04586Stems and ferny plumes of leaves,

You must enter in

To the small silences between

The leaves,

You must take your time

And tough the very peace

They issue from.
