It’s Wednesday – here are some problems to solve

There are two pair of Loons nesting on Northwood Lake.  We’ve been watching them and keeping an eye out for their chicks.  They’ve recently hatched.  They are beautiful birds to see and to listen to.

The Loons arrived in mid-May.  They built a nest and laid their eggs on May 21.  It takes 26 days for the eggs to hatch.  What was the date in June when the eggs hatched?

Chicks begin to dive for their own food with they are 12 weeks old.  How many days old would they be when they began to fish for themselves?

If each loon has 10 rows of 14 white spots on each wing.  How many spots are there altogether on the Loons at Northwood Lake?

Once in the air, Loons are fast fliers.  They can fly up to 70 miles per hour.  In winter they migrate to the Gulf of Mexico, 1,675 miles away.  If the loons fly 10 hours a day.  How many days will it take them to get to the Gulf of Mexico?

It’s Wednesday – here are some problems to solve

Mackenzie walked through the gardens at Prescott Park.  There were five different gardens.  Each garden had 14 daisies, 22 lilies, 17 begonias and 36 marigolds.

  • How many daisies were there altogether? 
  • How many lilies were there altogether?
  • How many begonias were there altogether?
  • How many marigolds were there altogether?
  • How many flowers were there altogether in the five gardens Mackenzie walked through?

Liam was building a Lego city.  He began building places he’d like to go on the first day.  Using 3,584 bricks, he built the skate park.  Using another 2,067 Lego bricks, he built an arcade.  And using 1,803 Lego bricks he built 3 different houses.

  • How many Lego bricks did he use in each house? They were all the same?
  • How many Lego bricks had Liam used altogether so far?

When Liam was finished with his entire Lego city, he had used 14,528 Lego bricks.

  • How many Lego bricks did Liam use to finish his city?  
  • What buildings do you think he built the second day? 

It’s Wednesday – here are some problems to solve

Happy 5th of July!  Here are some cookout problems to solve.

Tera had a cookout with her friends and family.  They used 5 packages of hotdog.  They used 4 packages of hamburgers.  They used 5 packages of rolls.

There were 8 hotdogs in each package.  There were 6 hamburgers in each package. And there were 12 rolls in each package. 

  • How many hotdogs did they eat?
  • How many hamburgers did they eat?
  • How many of the hotdogs or hamburgers got eaten without any roll?

Rachael lit some sparklers to celebrate the 4th of July.  She had 8 boxes of sparklers.  Each box held 8 sparklers.   At the end of the night there were 12 sparklers left.  How many did Rachael light during their celebration?

Sully went to Bailey’s Dockside for ice cream.  He sat on a bench to watch the boats while he was eating his sundae.  While he was there he saw 14 people get cones with 2 scoops of ice cream, 26 people who got cones with one scoop and 7 people who got banana splits – they all had three scoops.  

How many scoops of ice cream did Dockside serve while Sully was eating his sundae? 

It’s Wednesday – here are some problems to solve

Gabby and Lucy went to the beach. Gabby collected 1,276 shells and 2,907 rocks for a project.  Lucy collected 2,381 shells and 1,524 rocks for the project.  Together they used 4,039 shells and rocks to decorate tiles they were making for their fairy garden path.  How many shell and rocks did they have left over?

Mackenzie has been swimming in her pool 2 hours every day since school has been over.  How many minutes has she been in her pool?  (Weekends are included)

Max decided to build his own Lego city.  So far he has built 5 buildings for Maxopolis.  Each building used 1,436 Lego bricks.  How many Legos has Max used so far in his city?

 

It’s Wednesday – here are some problems to solve

There are 177 days in our school year.  There are six and a half hours of school each day. How many hours are there in a school year?

There are 16 kids in 3E  each of them has read at least 14 books this year.  How many books have they read altogether?

Everyone shared their portfolio with their families at their student-led conference.  It took 30 minutes for each portfolio share.  How many hours did it take for everyone to share their portfolios?

There are 16 awesome children in 3E.  How many teachers wish them a fabulous vacation and hope they will visit often next year?

 

It’s Wednesday – here are some problems to solve

Gabby went for a walk.  She was looking for signs of spring.  She saw 35 white violets and 46 purple violets.  Each violet had two leaves and five flower petals.   How many leaves were there altogether?  And how many flower petals were there altogether?

Mackenzie had 7 cookies to share with her sisters.  How much did they each get in their fair share?

Danick built a hockey rink out of Legos.  He used 1,428 white bricks, 359 black bricks, 164 red bricks and 82 blue bricks.  How many Legos did Danick use in all when he made his hockey rink?

When Samantha started her craft project she had 5,000 beads.  When she finished she had 327 beads left.  How many beads did she use in her project?

It’s Wednesday – here are some problems to solve

These are problems from October 3 this year.  When you first read them, you could solve one in 30 minutes.  How long does it take you to solve them now?

Write down what time it is now.  Once you’ve written that, begin solving.

Julie had 24 crackers.

She put them in four bags. Each bag had the same amount.

How many crackers did Julie put in each bag?

Tera made three necklaces.

She used 4 different colored beads on each of them.

She put five beads of each color on her necklace in a pattern. It was yellow, blue, green, and gold.

How many beads did Tera use to make her necklaces altogether?

Jayce had 200 Legos. He sorted them into four bins.

Each bin had the same amount.

How many Legos did Jayce put in each bin?

Max had three mini-bags of pretzels for snack.

There were five pretzels in each bag.

How many pretzels did Max have altogether?

If Max ate same amount each day for a week, how many pretzels would he have eaten then?

Write the time down when you’ve completed the problem(s).  Do you notice how you have changed as a mathematician?  I hope so.  From what I see everyday in our classroom,I know you have grown a lot.  I am proud of you and your effort to learn new things!

It Wednesday – here are some problems to solve

California became a state in 1850.  How old is California?  The state is the home to the oldest tree on earth.  General Sherman has been living for 3,500 years.  That’s older than we’ve been counting years.  How much older is it?

 

Colorado became a state in 1876.  How long has Colorado had its statehood. The largest “nugget” of silver was found in Aspen, CO in 1894.  How long ago was silver nugget found?

The silver nugget weighs 1,840 pounds.  The average 3rd grader weighs about 60 pounds.  How many 3rd graders would it take to eqaul the weight of the silver nugget from Colorado?

Washington became a state in 1889.  The Lunar Rover that was driven on the moon in 1969 was build in Seattle, WA.  How long has Washington been a state?  How long ago was the Lunar Rover driven on the moon?

It’s Wednesday – here are some problems to solve

Pennsylvania is the home of many things.  It became a state in 1787, but before that, it published the first magazine in America, American Magazine in 1741.  Now you can travel to Easton, PA and see the world’s largest crayon while you learn all about how crayons are made at the Crayola Factory that was founded in 1885.

How old is Pennsylvania?  How old is the Crayola Factory?  And how much earlier was the magazine published than the first crayons were made?

Ohio became a state in 1803.  In 1914 the first electric traffic light was invented and installed in Cleveland.

How old is Ohio?  How long was it a state before it needed traffic lights?  How many years have traffic lights been around?

New Jersey became the 3rd state in 1787.  The world’s first drive-in movie theater was opened in Camden in 1933.

How old is New Jersey?  How many years had NJ been a state before the movie theater was opened?  How old would  the movie theater be now?

Michigan became the 26th  state in 1837.  It is the home of some famous Fords.  Henry Ford, car manufacturer, was born in 1863.  Gerald Ford, our 38th president, was born in 1913.

How long had Michigan been a state before each man, Henry Ford and Gerald Ford, were born?  If alive today, how old would each man be?
