Our Day ~ Monday, April 20

Good Morning! It’s the 50th Celebration of Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22.  During our breaks this week, I’ll  suggest activities to help us appreciate and care for our planet a little bit more.

Morning Work – Start off your learning day by completing your weather graph, note the temperature on the section of the graph you color in and the type of cloud you see.  Use the symbols on the cloud finder.

This week I chose to start the day with a book to remind us to look for the good – it’s always there.  After you listen, pick up you gratitude rock and think of something new to add to your Gratitude Jar.

Check out each others blogs and leave a comment or two. You are sharing amazing writing, math and art. Thanks for staying connected!🙌🏼☀️💕

During  Morning Meeting I try to share something to remind us of how we can make the world better.

Fables are stories helping us to consider our choices.  They’ve been around for thousands of years and there are hundreds of them.  Aesop was a slave in Ancient Greece who is said to have earned his freedom through the wisdom of his storytelling.

Do you have a favorite fable?  If you were going tell others what a fable is, what would you say?  Leave your answers to these questions in a comment.  If you don’t have an answer yet, don’t worry.  We’ll figure it out together over the next week or two.  Let’s start by listening to two different versions of the Fox and the Crow.

What did you notice that was the same about the two version?  What was different?  Which did you like better?  Do you have a different version at home?  Leave your answers to these questions in a comment below.

Take a break, get a snack and move around.  Since we’re hopping into the week.  Hop on your right foot across the room, then hop on your left foot on the way back.  How many hops did it take in total.  Here are two Go Noodle videos: sing and dance to Little Green Froggy or relax and reflect on how you can Care for Earth.

Shared Reading – we’ll continue to solve riddles and listen to mysteries.  We’ll also explore some activities that will help us each write our own mystery.

The answers to Thursday’s riddles were:  #1 palm, #2 silence and #3 draw a shorter line beside it.

Here are some new riddles to solve ~

Riddle #1  It’s as light as a feather, but the strongest person can’t hold it for more than 5 minutes.  What is it?

Riddle #2  If you throw a blue stone in the Red Sea, what will it become”

Riddle #3 How many triangles are in this picture?

Enjoy the the companion of 7 Ate 9.  It called The Upper Case – Trouble in Capital City .(Sorry for the corny video. It’s a fun story)

Of all the picture book mysteries we’ve shared so far, what’s been your favorite and why?  Please leave your answer in a comment below.  It will help me plan when we begin writing our own mysteries.

So far we’ve shared:  The Case of the Missing Monkey, The Case of the Climbing Cat, The Deductive Detective, Betty’s Burgled Bakery, Piggins, What Really Happened to Humpty?, Grandpa’s Teeth and 7 Ate 9.

Take a break, go outside, run around, sing,  Create Bird-Friendly Window Decals, this egg-carton panda is fun or make some art.

ReadingKeep reading each and every day! Mystery book clubs will be meeting tomorrow.  Make sure you’ve read chapter 1 and written your notes.  Do you know what the mystery is?  Do you know who will be solving it?

Find a nice quiet place to read and enjoy at least 30 minutes with a great book.  You can find some fabulous picture book recordings at Storyline Online and recorded books here at Audible. The Elementary selections look great.  Enjoy!

At the end of reading today, choose two or three things from the Book Talk Questions grid when you leave a comment about what you read today on the blog.

Go outside, have some lunch, play a game, practice your recorder.  Relax.

Writer’s Workshop  –  Take this time to finish up any writing projects you are in the middle of  – country inquiry/travel journal or finishing the souvenirs.  You may also want to finalize your weather writing and illustrations.  Several of you began stories last week.  Please continue adding to them.  Don’t leave us in suspense.  😲  You’ve been doing some amazing writing and that made me wonder if you’d like to submit it to a contest.  Channel 11 – NHPBS is holding a Kids Writers Contest.  It might be something you’d like to try. Open the link to find out the rules and decide if it’s something for you.

Do you remember reading Where In the Wild and looking for the animals in the photographs. If you need a new writing idea, try creating a Mystery Animal Poem.

Try this format:

I have __________.

I have __________.

I live __________.

I eat __________.

I am __________.

I can __________.

I make the noise __________.

What Am I?

If you create an Animal Mystery Poem, please post it on your blog and find a way to illustrate it with some clues.

MathWe’ve been learning about area.  Warm-up with this Find the Area practice worksheet to remind yourself of what you know.

As long as you’re measuring with the same square unit, you can add areas together.  If I’m making two gardens.  One is behind my house.  It is a rectangle that is 6 feet long and 3 feet wide.  The second garden is to the left of the house.  It is a rectangle that is 5 feet long and 2 feet wide.  I need to have the gardener deliver soil and fertilizer for each square foot.  Should I have her make two deliveries; one for 18 square feet and another for 10 square feet?  Or can I have her make one delivery for 28 square feet and be able to fill both of my gardens.

I could do either, but one delivery would  probably better for the earth.  How would you solve Barbara’s Areas for Chickens Problem?

Next, here are today’s problems to choose from.  See if there are two that feel like just right challenges.   You can solve them in your journal or on a piece of paper.  It will be helpful to write the color and the date the problem was posted.  Thanks!

How many Lego bricks did he use in all to make the three forts?

How many Lego bricks did he have left to use for other projects?

Vera organized her art supplies.

She sorted and counted 1,532 crayons, 1,381 markers and 2,637 colored pencils.

How many art supplies did Vera organize altogether?

She gave 2,795 supplies to kids who didn’t have any.  How many art supplies did she have left?

Holden had 113,500 Legos altogether in a bin.

He used 16,154 red bricks, 34,437 white bricks and 9,528 blue bricks to make a spaceship.

He put them in a pile at the edge of the forest.  When he went back the next day, birds had eaten half of what Edward had collected.

How much food did the birds eat in one day?

Brady had 256 markers.  He threw away 68 because they had dried up.  How many markers does he have left?

Round your answer to the nearest 10 and to the nearest 100.

If you’ve worked through that, it’s definitely time for a game here at ABCya. If you want to try Prodigy talk to your parents.  Did anyone else find another game to recommend?  Leave the name in a comment so we can all have fun.  Did anyone else find another game you like.  Leave the name in a comment so we can all have fun.

  1. In the first one the fox said he was going to be suspicious and the second he did not announce it. The fox also had different compliments for the crow. In the first one he said to the crow you must have wits about you and in the second one he did not say that. The similarities are he said never trust a flatterer. Also the fox gave comments also he got the cheese. Another thing is the crow sang and dropped the cheese. I like the first one because I think the fox is more cunning. I also liked the lesson you must have wits about you.

    • Thanks for sharing your thoughts completely. I appreciate how carefully you compared the two. They were very similar. I thought the first one had more interesting or complicated vocabulary.
      🧀 Mrs. Eaves

  2. The difference is in the second one the fox gave advice in the end but in the first the fox didn’t. The thing that were the same was the fox said the the crow was the queen of the birds and he got the piece of cheese.

    • Hi Edward,
I think the fox gave advice in both fables. Didn’t the fox tell the crow she had a voice, but not wit? Check at see.
      Did you like the moral?
      Mrs. Eaves🧀

  3. 7 ate 9 because I like how it is about gratitude and appreciating yourself. It has all the good stuff to a mystery like red herrings and alibis.

    • Thank you Landon.
I appreciate knowing what you thought. I like all the puny connections too. I think Tara Lazar is very creative.
      🙌🏼Mrs. Eaves

    • Hi May,
Did you find any difference in the stories?
They did have different pictures. Since fables have been around for over 1000 years, there have been tons of different illustrations. Do you have a collection of fables at home? I have one that belonged to my grandfather.
      🧀Mrs. Eaves

  4. I started The Silver Chair from the Narnia book series. It takes place in Narnia. My favorite part of the story so far is when they gather at the Owl Parliament. They are going on a mission to find Prince Rilian the lost prince. Prince Rilian is the son of Caspian the Tenth. He goes out to avenge his mother by killing a serpent. He never returned.

    • Thanks for sharing your reading. I just downloaded all of Narnia so I can listen to them while I’m walking. I can’t wait to read them all again. It’s been a long time.
      Thanks for recommending the series.
      📚Mrs. Eaves

  5. The first story the fox says kind words to the crow and the crow trusts the fox right away and tries to impress him with his singing and the cheese falls into the Fox’s mouth.
The second story the crow at first was not falling for the foxes flattering comments but then slowly started trusting the fox and the cheese once again falls into the Fox’s mouth.
Morale of both the stories is the same “Do Not Trust People Who Flatter You With Compliments!”

    • Hi Brady,
Thanks for sharing your detailed comparison. Thank you for helping me think about how the crow reacted differently over time. I wonder how we would describe the difference between flattery and compliments. Do you think there is a difference?
      🧀 Mrs. Eaves

  6. The Upper Case – Trouble in Capital City . Was my fave because: It was funny and stereos at the same time.

    • Thanks for sharing you favorite mystery.
It was funny with a serious side too. I like how you noticed that.
      🔎Mrs. Eaves

  7. My favorite version was the second one the thing that was the same is the foxes both wanted the cheese and the thing that was different is in the second book had compliments and the first one made the bird want show him he was better.

    • Hi Katherine,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the fables. I hadn’t thought of the crow character like that, and I agree with you. Do you think there is difference between flattery and compliments?
I’m curious to know what you think.
      🧀Mrs. Eaves

  8. One thing that was the same was the fox tried to flater the crow, but in the other one the fox used different compliments. The same moral was that you never trust a flaterer, but he says it in a different way.

Hope to see you in August!

    -Sophie

    • Hi Sophie,
Do you think there is a difference between flattery and compliments. I think the first is said to gain something for yourself, but the second is a sincere gift to the other person.
I wonder if there is ever a time that flattery is good. Hmmm… I’ll have to think about that. What do you think?
      🧀Mrs. Eaves

  9. My favorite mystery book was Betty’s Burgled Bakery because it’s kind of cool that the author was able to make a page full of words with the same letter in alphabetical order. I can’t remember what it’s called. 🙂

    • Hi Anna,
Thanks for sharing your favorite mystery. I thought the author was pretty talented to create an alphabet books that was a story too. The word for words all beginning in the same letter in a sentence is called alliteration.
Like Anna always ate apples all afternoon. 🙂
      🔎Mrs. Eaves

  10. Riddle #1 It’s as light as a feather, but the strongest person can’t hold it for more than 5 minutes. What is it? = Breath. I think.

Riddle #2 If you throw a blue stone in the Red Sea, what will it become” = A purple sea???

Riddle #3 How many triangles are in this picture? =64? I think.

    • Hi Katherine,
Can you tell me more? What about it stands out to you?
      I’m just curious.
      🔎Mrs. Eaves

  11. I noticed that both the foxes are flatterers. The second crow was more suspicious of the fox’s flattery than the first crow. I kinda like the first version because the pictures were more real looking. I liked the words in the second version better. I would chose the second version completely if the pictures looked more real.

    • Hi Justin,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas about the two versions. I hadn’t thought about comparing the art. I agree with you. I thought some of the words in the first version were challenging and maybe even confusing.
      🧀Mrs. Eaves

  12. The Upper Case

This is my favorite mystery we have read because it is funny. It is called Upper Case City and all the upper case letters are gone. And that just sounds funny! Question mark and exclamation point said all the upper case letters are missing. Also, it turned out exclamation point put the upper case letters on a great, big billboard. I really liked that the grammar police came at the end. This is why it is my favorite mystery book. (Piggins came in a close second.)

    • Thank you for your thoughtful and complete explanation of why this books is your choice. I think the author must have had a lot of fun playing with ideas. I wonder if she’ll dream up another number and letter mystery.
      I hope so!
      🔎Mrs. Eaves

  13. I think a fable is a story that helps you make your choices and tells you a lesson. I like the Tortoise and the Hare because the Hare thinks he will win the race. The Hare took a nap, and when he woke up the tortoise was way in front of him and crossed the finish line. The Hare accepted defeat and learned his lesson.

    • Hi Vera,
You do know about fables. I like the Tortoise and the Hare too. I think my favorite is the Country Mouse and City Mouse – but I like a lot of others too!
      💕Mrs. Eaves

  14. My favorite mystery has been 7 Ate 9 because 9 flips over to be 6 and confuses people. I thought it was funny and really made me think about where 9 actually was. At first they thought it was 7, but then 7 was on vacation.

    • Hi Vera,
Thanks for sharing your favorite. I think the author is really creative. She really knows how to play with ideas and common expressions.
      🔎Mrs. Eaves

    • Hi Estella,
Thanks for sharing. I think this author is pretty creative. I wonder if she’ll write any more books in this series.
      🔎Mrs. Eaves

  15. I read Junie B.Jones by Barbara park
In the book Junie was going snorkeling and she thought that she saw a eel and a jellyfish. So she swam back to shore but when she tried to run she fell. The next day they went on a tore bus and she thought that it was going to be boring.

    • Hi Elena,
Thanks for sharing your reading. Was the bus tour boring, or did Junie actually end up having a good time?
      📚Mrs. Eaves

  16. Today I did my chapter of Brixon Brothers Case Of The Mistaken Identity. I love the end part of the chapter the best. I find it very interesting 🧐 and want to read more, I mean who doesn’t when you find a secret passageway and there is a man behind you holding a knife! I would be so scared 😱. But have you ever wondered what if you were in a book and someone read you over and over and over again you would be going through the story again and again so you wouldn’t be scared the next couple times. If you die you knew you would have plenty of lives. Hope to see you in August!
    -Sophie

    • Thanks for sharing your ideas. I can’t wait to talk to you tomorrow about it.
(I see you learned how to add emojis! 👍🏻)

  17. I am using my moms iPad because she needed my computer 💻. I am thinking I should do the First Day Of School for the contest and draw some pictures for it.
What do you think? I am worried it will be to much for PBS kids. I need your opinion.

    • Hi Sophie,
I don’t think it will be too much. Are you thinking it is too long? You can always revise it to make it fit. I’m thinking it is in the file cabinet. Is that so? It might be a challenge to get it, if it is. I can talk to Ms. Snyder though.
      I say, “Go for it!”
      ✏️🙌🏼💕Mrs. Eaves

  18. I read The Buddy Files The Case Of The School Ghost by Dori Hillestad Butler. It is about a dog that is named BUDDY and a cat that has no name and they got a message from the ghost that’s name is Agatha and Buddy is going to sleep over at the museum and Buddy was out side and then the cat sat on the tree and gave them a message that said if you are in the basement then you are going to be in a lot of trouble!

    chapter 1.

    • Thank for sharing your reading Estella.
I think it will be fun to share this book together in our book club.
Great job describing the first chapter. I think the sleep over is in the school library.
      📚Mrs. Eaves

  19. I am still reading Beverly Cleary’s book, The Mouse and the Motorcycle.

Ralph was scared that Keith would be angry that he had lost the motorcycle, but he needed to tell the truth.  So he told Keith that he had lost the motorcycle, but Keith was not angry for some reason.  Then Ralph asked for something not weird for breakfast.  He asked for toast, jelly, and bacon.  Keith said that he would get it for him.  When Keith got back he had a fever and he was sick.  He was sick in a bad way.  So Ralph went to go find the motorcycle when Keith was asleep.

And that is how far I got today in the book.

    • Thanks for sharing your reading Justin. This is a great part in the story.
Both Ralph and Keith (and also Matt) are great characters.
I hope you’ll have a chance to read the other two books that feature Ralph. I wonder which would be your favorite.
      📚Mrs Eaves

  20. Fables:
The same in each story is the fox getting the cheese from the crow. The difference in the stories was in the second one he had a flower, and the crow looked different. I liked the first one better.

    • Thanks for sharing your thought about the fables. Did you like the first one because you like the illustrations or the words better? Which did you think had a more helpful moral?
      🧀Mrs. Eaves

  21. I am still reading Wonder. A new main character is Justin he is Via’s boyfriend he is kind and sometimes funny. In his part it is about him and Via doing a play called Our Town and how Miranda got the main character and Via got her understudy. Also it is about how Auggie met him. I started Auggie’s second part it is about how the war is coming to an end and how Julians side is now down to only about 4 people and now how everyone is a neutral almost. I have enjoyed reading this book even though I have seen the movie.

    • I haven’t seen the movie. I wonder how I would feel about it. I’m not sure.
      Maybe.
      📚Mrs. Eaves

  22. I have enjoyed reading this book.

    • Thanks for sharing your reading. There is a lot to think about in this book. It is worth reading over and over again. There are stories about other characters too. Julian’s story is really interesting to read. It’s hard to feel empathy if you don’t take the time to know someone’s story. Both of these stories helped me be a more thoughtful person.
